I have had a long term interest in PKM (personal knowledge management), particularly note-taking, ideation and journaling. Forte’s book doesn’t really provide a strong method for managing information overflow, generating actionable notes, and generating output. It takes some of the themes of Getting Things Done by David Allen and tries to elaborate upon them. The discussion of commonplace books is interesting. He doesn’t come out and say directly that your notes eventually have to be a primary source of information replacing google as your first search, but that should be the goal of any system worth maintaining. It is easy to create a junk drawer of facts and opinions, but do nothing but add to the pile. The Informed Life podcast has the best interviews on the topic I have been able to find.
